The idea of dropping a 3D model with moving elements into live-action footage seemed daunting to me, so I decided to face the challenge and create an animation featuring a flight along a rugged coastline past a lighthouse with a rotating beam of light. Thanks to a pair of wonderful tutorials by Sean Frangella, I learned how to track live-action drone footage in After Effects, then import the tracking data into Cinema 4D. There, I textured and lit the lighthouse, then anchored it into the camera move using the imported data. Back in After Effects, I added a beam of volumetric light using a Red Giant plug-in called Lux. Since I have a passion for movie titles sequences, I finished the animation by adding a movie title reveal for a fictional film called “Lightkeeper’s Secret.” I love this stuff!
