I was shopping in Target a few weeks ago and couldn’t help but notice the eye-catching athletic wear posters. The posters combine colorful gradients with photos of athletes in action. In today’s Workbench, I’m going to reveal the design secrets behind these beautiful posters. Thanks to Ray Mascarenhas for his submission. I find Ray’s filmstrip composite so compelling that I’m devoting next week’s Workbench to exploring his techniques.

It appears that you can get an almost identical color effect without needing a mask on the gradient layer if you use the Lighten blending mode on the gradient layer. Maybe it’s just me, but I frequently find I have to go back to fine tune a mask, so I prefer to have just one copy to work on.
