This week’s Workbench addresses a compositing quandary submitted by Jim Griggs. His desire is transform a photograph of a tree in a field of grasses into one that looks as though it was captured on the Serengeti. To achieve this, Jim wishes to replace the existing tree with an acacia. Because acacia trees exhibit thousands of small nooks and crannies between the leaves, we’ll explore a pair of strategies for overcoming this compositing dilemma.

Mark, for some reason, none of the QT video is showing on three computers I have tried for viewing this week’s WB or others I have viewed in the past. It MAY be my computers, but wonder if there is an issue at your end. Tried “repairing” QT on at least one of my computers before posting. Audio is coming through fine. Again may be me, but in case not, I post. Always enjoy and learn from the WB and miss being able to see it this week.

Follow-up on my earlier post. WB plays fine on QT Alternative on machine at work (WinXP). Does not play on any machine at home (3 WinXP) with latest version of QT installed. I think new version QT was recently released and installed, although I may be thinking of Java or something else. Guess the problem is either mine or with latest version of QT. At home this evening, I will try installing QT Alternative and see if that fixes the problem on those machines.

    Mark
When I use the patch tool which I tried on this workshop and the workshop with the pyramid I get ghosting around the area where I patched. I still see some of the old image showing through the patch.
Is there a setting that I have set wrong.
I have heard this mentioned in other forums many times.

Problem solved; sort of. Recent install of QT 7.6.4 was the problem. Many discussions on the web. No video. Uninstalled and reinstalled v. 7.5.5 and WB plays fine. Not sure what I might have done to iTunes in the process. That will have to wait for tomorrow. Reinstalling older version of QT in web discussions causes iTunes not to work. We’ll see.

I’m always confused by the blend-if sliders, and this helped immensely. Thank you for taking the time!

Thanks – the Blend If sliders are always confusing. Thanks again. Waiting for all the videos to be available on DVD. Credit Card is warm and waiting.

FWIW, the problem is definitely QT ver 7.6.4. Going back to earlier version, restores video, but iTunes no longer works. Hope Apple is working on fix, as I am not sure Mark can do anything at his end, although I see posts of some QT posting, steaming options working. Guess for now, I will just have to watch the WB on a machine that does not require iTunes. Again, hope there is a fix for QT soon. Otherwise, will have to explore QT alternative, which is what we use at work and has no problem.

Hi Mark, I am New at photoshop, and I am interested in merging and blending techniques similar to what you deal with in this workbench. would you make me a CD with many of your workbeanches on this subject? I enjoy your work and I think your help would take me closer to my goal. Please contact me with any questions and the price. Others maybe interested in such a project also. Carlos
